Why we loved the French Riviera
The Riviera has a reputation for being expensive and a bit much, and it is both, and it is still worth every day. You start with two nights in St. Tropez, which is the version of the coast people picture: Pampelonne beach clubs, a genuinely beautiful old town, and a long lunch that turns into a long afternoon. Then you settle into eight nights on the Baie des Anges, with Nice as the base, its old town, a food tour, the Promenade, wine country up at Bellet, and dinner at Le Plongeoir hanging out over the water.
What makes ten days work here is that almost everything else is a day trip. Cannes and the Lérins Islands. Èze on its cliff, then Monaco by afternoon. Villa Ephrussi and the coves of Cap Ferrat. And Menton, where you can cross into Italy for a market morning in Ventimiglia and be back for dinner in France. Take the ferry instead of the car when you can, order the rosé at lunch, and let the days run long.
