Is this good for solo travelers, couples, or families?

Japan is one of the easiest places we have traveled, and this route works for almost anyone. We did it as a couple and it suits couples and friends especially well: late dinners, tiny bars, and a pace that rewards two people who like to keep moving. Solo travelers do exceptionally well here, since it is safe, the trains are simple, and eating alone at a counter is completely normal. Families are fine too, with teamLab, the go-karting, and the arcades all going over well, though the go-karting has a licence requirement and the bar nights obviously skew adult.

Do I need to speak the country's language?

Accepted Answer

No. You can travel Japan comfortably with no Japanese at all. Signage in the cities and on the trains is bilingual, staff at hotels and major sights speak enough English, and translation apps handle the rest, including menus. The guide includes a short Japanese section anyway, because a konnichiwa going in and an arigatou gozaimasu going out matter here more than most places, and they cost you nothing.

How physical is the itinerary?

Moderate, and mostly it is walking. Japan runs on trains and your feet, and you will log serious steps every day, plus a lot of stairs in stations. The specific efforts are the climb up through the torii gates at Fushimi Inari, which keeps going much further than most people expect, the temple stairs at Kiyomizu-dera, the volcanic paths at Owakudani, and a full day on your feet at Universal. Nothing technical, but bring shoes you can walk fifteen thousand steps in.

How far in advance should I book?

Earlier than you would think, because the best things here sell out weeks ahead. Lock the omakase counters, teamLab Borderless, the Monkey Kart go-karting, and Universal Studios well in advance, plus the samurai session and Steak Otsuka in Kyoto. For the go-karting specifically you need a valid International Driving Permit, which has to be arranged in your home country before you leave, so start that early. Shinkansen seats and the Romancecar to Hakone are worth reserving too. The guide flags exactly what to lock in and when.

What's the best time of year to go?

We went in mid-October and it is exactly what we would recommend. The heat and humidity of summer have broken, the days are clear and mild, and the light is beautiful, particularly in Kyoto where the maples are starting to turn toward the end of the month. It is comfortable walking weather all day, which matters on a trip that is almost entirely walking. Spring is the other classic window, with the cherry blossoms in late March into early April, though that is the busiest and most expensive stretch of the year. We would avoid July and August, which are genuinely hot and humid, and note that late October into November brings peak autumn colour and the crowds that come with it, so book accommodation early.

What do I do if I want to deviate from the itinerary?

Please do. The guide says it on the first page: book what matters and let everything between it wander. The only things you cannot really move are the timed bookings, the omakase counters, teamLab, the go-karting, and Universal, plus your train reservations. Everything else is a frame. Follow the side street, eat at the counter with the queue, stay for one more in the tiny bar. Tokyo rewards the late night and Kyoto rewards the early morning, and the plan is built to flex around both.
