Why we loved Madeira

Madeira is all mountain, dropping straight into the Atlantic, and it rewards the early riser. Three days is tight, so this plan is built around the big things. Day one heads up the northwest coast: a glass platform over the cliffs at Miradouro do Guindaste, a tiny cable car down to the sea at Achadas da Cruz, the volcanic pools at Porto Moniz, and a swim off the black sand at Seixal under green cliffs. Dinner is back in Funchal's old town at Lá ao Fundo.

Day two starts by 7am at Achada do Teixeira, on the PR 1.2 trail to Pico Ruivo, the island's highest peak, with the Stairway to Heaven ridge running toward Pico do Arieiro above a sea of clouds. The afternoon is gentler: Monte Palace gardens, the wicker toboggan back down, a soak at Til Spa, and a dry-aged T-bone at Kampo. The last day is Cascata dos Anjos, the ancient laurels of Fanal Forest, and the Levada das 25 Fontes. Pack layers, give every mountain drive more time than the map says, and set the alarm.
