Why we loved Provence

Provence is the part of this trip people rush, and it is the part we would protect. Four days based in Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, a village stacked up a cliff under a chapel you climb to, with the Gorges du Verdon on your doorstep. You set one alarm, for the lavender at Valensole at sunrise, and it is worth every minute of the early start. The rest of it is deliberately unhurried: the old town, a spa afternoon at Le Couvent des Minimes, ice cream at L'Etoile Givrée, dinner at Les Tables Du Cloitre.

The finale is the water. The Sentier Blanc-Martel through the gorge, then a boat out onto Lake Sainte-Croix, where the water is a green you will not quite believe until you are floating in it. Four days is short, and that is the point. This is the slow half of a bigger trip, and it works completely on its own.
