Is this good for solo travelers, couples, or families?

This one suits couples and friends best, which is how we traveled it: beach clubs, long lunches, late dinners, and a pace that rewards two people who like to keep moving. Solo travelers do well here too, especially based in Nice, where the old town and the Promenade make for easy days on your own. Families are absolutely fine on the coast, with the beaches and the Lérins ferry going over well with kids, though beach clubs skew adult and the day trips make for long days. Older kids handle it easily.

Do I need to speak the country's language?

No. English is widely spoken across the Riviera and in the tourist parts of Provence, in restaurants, hotels, and at the sights. The guide includes a short French section, not because you need it, but because a bonjour on the way in and a merci on the way out genuinely changes how the rest of the interaction goes here. It matters more in France than most places, and it costs you nothing.

How physical is the itinerary?

Moderate, and mostly on your terms. There is a lot of sitting on beaches and at tables, and then a few specific days that ask more: the climb up to the chapel at Moustiers, the Sentier Blanc-Martel through the Verdon gorge, and the steep old towns of Èze and Menton, which are stairs from bottom to top. Add long walking days in Nice and Cannes and a few big drives. Nothing technical, but pack real shoes and expect the hill towns to earn their views.

How far in advance should I book?

Earlier than you would think, because in summer the good things sell out. Lock the car, the Verdon boat day, and the beach clubs at Pampelonne well ahead, along with the Secret Food Tour, the Lérins ferry, and any spa time at Le Couvent des Minimes. We went in July, at the height of the season, and it is what we would recommend, with eyes open about the trade. July is when the Riviera is fully awake: every beach club open, the ferries running, the towns lit up at night, and the sea warm enough that you actually swim. It is also when the Valensole lavender is at its peak, which is a narrow window and the single best reason to come when we did. The cost is crowds and prices, both at their highest, so book early and start your days earlier than feels necessary. June and September are the sensible alternatives if you want the coast without the crush, but you risk missing the lavender in September and catching it early in June.

What do I do if I want to deviate from the itinerary?

Please do. The guide says it on the first page: book what matters and let everything between it wander. The only things you cannot really move are the car, the boat day, the beach club reservations, and the dinners you locked in. Everything else is a frame. Take the ferry instead of the car.
