Is this good for solo travelers, couples, or families?

This one is built for couples and friends, which is how we traveled it: long beach days, boat days, late dinners, and a few proper nights out, with a pace that rewards two people who like to keep moving. Solo travelers will do fine, especially in Cagliari, Alghero, and Rome. Families can absolutely do the beaches, and the Sardinian coast is wonderful for kids, but this particular route leans adult, with early starts, big driving days, the hike down to Cala Goloritze, and late Roman nights. Older kids handle it well. With little ones, you would want to soften the pace.

Do I need to speak the country's language?

No. English is widely spoken across the tourist parts of Sardinia and throughout Rome, in restaurants, hotels, and at the sights. The guide includes a short "A Little Italian" section, not because you need it, but because a few words go a long way here. Italians light up when you try, even badly.

How physical is the itinerary?

Moderate, with a few demanding spots. There is a lot of beach time, but several of the best places make you work for them: the hike down to Cala Goloritze, where the climb back up is the real effort, the pebble coves where water shoes earn their place, and long walking days through Rome in the heat. Add several big Sardinian driving days and a couple of early boat mornings. Nothing technical, but pack real shoes and expect to be on your feet.

How far in advance should I book?

Earlier than you would think, because the trip runs on reservations. Lock in the Sardinia-to-Rome flight, the rental car, and the boat days (La Maddalena and the Baunei coast) well ahead in summer, along with the Cala Goloritze permit, the Sella & Mosca winery tour, the sunset sail, the Colosseum timed ticket, the Sistine Chapel entry, the Rome cooking class, and the Secret Food Tour. What's the best time of year to go?

September, in shoulder season, is the sweet spot, and it is when we would tell you to go. The sea is still warm enough for the boat days and the coves, the beaches still deliver, and the August rush have eased off, which matters most on the Costa Smeralda, where crowds and prices peak hardest in high summer. Late spring through early autumn all works, but we would steer you to September over peak July and August, and be aware that at the shoulder edges some spots wind down, like the Cagliari wine bar that made no promises late in the season.

What do I do if I want to deviate from the itinerary?

Go for it, and the guide says so on the very first page. The only things you cannot really move are the flight, the rental car, the booked boat days, and anything prepaid or timed, like the Colosseum and the Sistine Chapel. Everything else is a starting point. Skip a booked cove for the emptier one down the coast, let an aperitivo run long, trade a reservation for the place a local points you to. The trip rewards improvisation, and we built the plan to flex around it.
